Biological Information[/u]
Height: 5'4"
Weight: 135 lbs.
Appearance: Kyne stands at average height for a human female, toned from military training and maintained with regular exercise. She's normally seen in uniform or in her armor. Her tone is a bit pale, but not so pale that would make one wonder if she's a vampire as a half-joke. Her are blue/green to gray in color, depending on the lighting, but the one persistent feature about them is that there's a ring of yellow around the pupil (central heterochromia), and larger than average. Her face is a relatively oval shape, matched with a somewhat thick neck. Her hair is what's referred to as "dishwater blonde" (many mistake it for brown), reaching her mid-back but normally kept pulled back into a ponytail or a braid. Makeup is kept to a minimum - slight hint of blush, eyeliner, and blue eyeshadow. If attending a formal event, this includes lipstick.
Her on-duty uniform is that of standard Alliance marine wear, and what she's normally seen wearing unless out on a mission, in which she's normally seen wearing her armor. This is the black, form-fitting one-piece suit, gloves, and boots that is normally seen worn by most female officers and soldiers on most Alliance vessels, and also helpful in keeping herself silent if caught off-guard... or if she wants to startle people, as she is known to do that purely for her own amusement. ((Example picture: here on right.))
Kyne's armor follows a similar protocol: light, as silent as possible, dark colors. Just no pink. There will be hell if there's pink. ((Please see here, middle example.))
Personality: Kyne's personality really all depends on the situation. On the battlefield, she comes off cold, quiet, calculating, and collected. She's got a great amount of pride as a sharpshooter and someone who can keep herself hidden when the situation calls for it, and it's evident that she holds herself to incredibly high standards. Hot-headedness in a fight gets you nowhere, she believes, and prefers to keep things clean, quiet, and hidden. Ironic, as she's known to be a bit... impulsive. She sounds icy, keeps her sentences short and to the point (though by no means sweet), and tries to keep her comments during a firefight to a minimum unless there's something she or a teammate can exploit.
Around strangers and commanding officers, she's normally silent unless spoken to. Around friends and crewmates, she's a little more talkative, and definitely a lot more casual, but she keeps others at a distance. It's hard to get close to her, but that doesn't mean that she's an uncaring jerk. Quite the opposite. The woman may be cynical and sarcastic, but she's a bit idealistic and caring of others, especially of children. Most of her smiles are the standard polite greeting smiles and rarely actually genuine - to the point that most people believe that her default expression is permanently set to "scowl". In truth, this is mainly a facade due to an introverted and shy nature. The girl attempts to be stoic, attempting to keep her emotions more or less under reign, but will start to get snappy under great duress and often resorts to staying silent to try and counteract this.
However, Kyne is also a bit... paranoid - a trait she admits she shares with her uncle, though she'll say no more about the subject. Her personal quarters is her one place of solace and she generally does not let anyone in there or let anyone but her touch her equipment. Asking about her family is like asking a stone wall about the day's gossip; it will tell you squat. She tries to never let others know when she's upset, believing that her problems are her own and she'd rather not burden anyone with them. Ironic, as she's generally caring for others and tries to do everything to help her friends and teammates. The girl also has a philosophy that she states is in direct opposition to her uncle's before he died, embodied in the motto "Two in harmony surpass one in perfection" - humanity cannot reach its full potential on its own, nor can any other alien race; only together can that potential be realized.
She's not perfect, and she'll be the first to admit that - she's attention deficit, something she's been working on since she was first diagnosed in her late teens, and while it can give her an edge in terms of sniping and keeping an eye out for incoming attacks, it tends to put her at a bit of a disadvantage in social gatherings. She prefers small gatherings to large crowds, and is normally in her quarters unless on a mission. She's an avid collector of precious and semi-precious stones, always on the lookout for a new stone to add to her collection. She's also begun to establish a tradition of naming her weapons after fallen comrades both as a honorable remembrance and as a reminder of what she's fighting for.
Like most humans, Kyna's ambitious... very ambitious. That does not mean, however, that she plans on stabbing everyone in the back to get to the top - she plans on getting there without having to betray anyone as much as possible, as she highly values loyalty. For the moment, her short-term goal is becoming N7. Her primary ambition? Becoming a Spectre, something that she knows full well isn't likely to happen anytime soon, but she hopes to prove herself capable enough to at least be considered a candidate. She's also fully expecting to be shot down if she applies, but she has no intention of applying in her current state.
History: Kyna Harper tends to speak little about her past. Childhood was spent moving around different cities on Earth before finally settling down for her middle and high school years, but it taught her to keep others mostly at a distance, believing that she'll eventually leave them behind or they'll leave themselves. She was on friendly terms with her parents, but also kept them at a distance, believing that she could only really rely on herself. They generally weren't interested in what she was doing - the only member of her family that was, it seemed, was her uncle, though that changed after she graduated and joined the Alliance military. She refuses to talk about him, and with good reason; he's done "a lot of bad stuff - jumped off the slippery slope and it got him killed," as she puts it. Their opposing views on humanity's place in the galaxy also put them at odds, but that had been a subject she normally avoided. Communications were cut off after she enlisted.
She trained as an Infiltrator, sharp-eyed and with fast reflexes, focused to the point that she was able to block out distractions... "hyperfocusing" as she calls it. Something she also calls a "double-edged sword", as it could leave her open to attack while she's setting up a shot and unaware of her surroundings. If she wasn't training, she was making calibrations to her weapons or researching other alien worlds and human colonies she could possibly have been deployed to. Wiki-walks during her off-time were common. After graduation, she began to climb ranks, eventually reaching the rank of NCO, namely Service Chief.
The girl caught attention for ICT in 2183 after a mission that had gone quite sour. What began as a recon mission on Moros quickly turned into a slaughter when Kyna and her eight other team-members ran into a Geth squadron... with the humans getting slaughtered. Unable to call for aid until the Geth - and the mines surrounding them - were done for, the group attempted to hold the line for as long as they could. Despite their efforts and the dent they made to the Geth attackers, only two of the team survived: Kyna herself, and her spotter, Vittore de Mecurio (nicknamed "Ezio"). She has blamed herself for the death of her teammates, taking up a tradition of naming her weapons after fallen comrades, beginning with her pistol (Rhys), and using the incident as motivation to complete N-level training.
Kyna was trapped on Earth when the Reapers arrived in 2185, namely in the Vancouver-Seattle Metropolis area. She had completed N5 training only a few weeks before, and had been caught by surprise when the attack began. Alone, with limited ammo and surrounded by Husks, Kyna held out as long as she could on her own before rendezvousing with other survivors and attempting to help them stay alive as well as escape. Not all of the civilians she was escorting survived, but those that did (about seven children and three adults) were rescued with Kyna providing cover, fleeing to the Citadel on the SSV Spokane.
Due to mental stress and physical recuperation, she was ordered to remain on the Citadel until further notice. She is currently considered on shore leave on the Citadel, waiting for her next assignment (much to her chagrin...), be it normal or for N6 training scenarios.
Roleplay Sample: This. Was. Going. To. Get. Old. Fast.
She had been stuck on the Citadel for two months. Two! Months! Two months of "shore leave" her ass. More like two months of being a beached... something. Beached soldier? Beached marine? Beached space whale? Maybe. She didn't know. At the moment, she didn't really care. More than anything, she wanted to get back to Earth, damn it! She was needed on-duty, or at least helping with the rebuilding effort. The woman was feeling like she was taking up bed-space under false pretence if she wasn't out there doing something. The Reapers were gone. All that was left behind were a lot of relieved civilians, war-weary soldiers, and one hell of a clean-up job across the galaxy.
She fired at the next target, hitting dead center. Again. Eject current clip, reload, take aim.
"How long have you been here now? Three hours?"
"Five," was the bitter reply of the young marine woman, not even bothering to turn towards the man standing behind her. "Bored out of my skull, too. At least moving targets make you think."
Another gunshot. Eject clip. Reload. Aim. She still didn't look at the newcomer. "What brings you to the C-Sec firing range, Ezio? I would've thought you'd be back on Earth helping with clean-up."
"Heard you were in the area. One of the other officers said you'd been here a while. Figured I'd stop by and say 'hello'. Glad you aren't a Husk, either."
Gunshot again. Eject clip. Reload. Aim.
"Glad you aren't, either, but I don't like deception, NCO de Mecurio; you of all people should know that." Fourth shot. Lather, rinse, repeat. "What's this about?"
"Never miss a beat, do you, Harper?" inquired the older Italian man, looking tired. There was silence as NCO Kyna Harper steadied her aim. "...I've been reassigned. Elysium. Figured you oughtta know."
Fire. Eject clip. The blonde set down the rifle. "Getting beached too, huh?"
NCO Vittore "Ezio" de Mecurio nodded. "I leave at 0800 hours."
Harper sighed, standing as she lowered her head, pinching the bridge of her nose and rubbing it a bit. She was tired. She was annoyed. And now her best friend and only over survivor of what they call the "Moros Incident" was being beached. "I don't envy you, Vittore. They're likely gonna need all the good soldiers they can get on Elysium."
"I'm not looking forward to it, either," he admitted. "But maybe it's what we both need. Some off-time."
"Ezio, I've been a beached whale for two months. I'm gonna go space crazy at this rate."
The other NCO laughed, though it was a bitter one. "A beached whale, eh? That's Kyne for you... Can't sit still unless she's got a target in the scope." A weak smile crossed the younger woman's face. "You'll get a new assignment soon, I'm sure of it. Skills like yours can't go to waste, after all." She shrugged, turning back to the firing range. "You think this'll last, though?"
Kyne glanced back at him. "What, this calm? No. It's not gonna last. Never does. No 'boom' today? 'Boom' tomorrow. There's always a 'boom' tomorrow." She picked up the rifle, finally reloading it. "Always."
de Mecurio shrugged this time. "Well, here's to hoping that the 'boom' doesn't kill us." He nodded once before turning towards the door. "I'll see you around sometime if you find yourself on Elysium, Harper."
The man left. Harper took aim, steadied her hand, and fired again. Eject. Reload. Take Aim. Repeat.
Beyond those sounds, the firing range was silent once more.
